The Novel and the Modern World. Last semester I took a seminar class on James Joyce, and of course no class on Joyce would be complete without reading Ulysses. Hans discussed his plans to convert his well-received Critical and Synoptic Edition of Ulysses into a searchable hypertexted ebook/webspace. I read it But when I consulted with my old professor, he said the Gabler edition is still the best, so I went with that one. Ulysses is hard enough, so why make it harder on yourself? By now I'm 4) Edition: I thought I'd be cool and get the controversial Gabler edition, but I got nervous. Finally, for Ulysses, I'll be reading from the “Complete and Unabridged Text, as Corrected and Reset in 1961″ put out by Vintage. In the first post "Guided or Unguided" I researched and learned the many options readers have, for "how" to read Ulysses. A new edition of Ulysses, edited by H. Chicago and London: University of Chicago Press. U = Ulysses: The Corrected Text. This is the edition you should read. The Gabler Ulysses was been almost entirely withdrawn from British bookshops, and replaced by a facsimile copy of the 1922 edition, which is riddled with typos and errors. I enjoyed Dubliners and Portrait of an Artist as a Young Man, but I thought Ulysses was pretty daunting. I believe this is meant to pair with the Gabler edition of Ulysses and, quite frankly, this is the edition that you want to read anyway. I'm not sure that we can come to such an agreement: those who already own a copy other than the Gabler edition won't be willing to buy another one. By the way, I don't know Ulysses or Joyce as well as most of you. Aptly titled "James Joyce and the Nutty Professor," it's a good read and it covers the entire story of Mr. Now reading the Gabler Edition (text corrected in the 1980s) of James Joyce's Ulysses.
